Sustainable Food and Kitchen Gift Guide 2020

Jam makes a great gift!

Jam makes a great gift!

Finding sustainable gifts can be a huge challenge. This post gives you all the ideas you need (at every price range!) to buy sustainable foodie gifts this holiday season!

$0 - $15

Home-Canned foods

Whether it's jelly, pickles or caramel sauce, canned foods make excellent gifts. You don't have to worry about refrigerating them, and your giftee doesn't have to worry about them going bad any time soon. Just make sure you use a trusted recipe and canning method so your food is safely preserved!

Seeds

If your giftee loves gardening, now is the perfect time to buy seeds for them. Germinating will start in just a few months, so get their favorite seeds before it's too late! If they have a small garden, be sure to stick with smaller plants like herbs, leafy greens and root vegetables.

$15 - $30

Local Treats

Buying goodies (food or non-food) from small businesses and local artisans is a great way to be more socially sustainable. Seek out small companies online and ask around to find the best local shops for your needs!

Thrifted Finds

Thrift stores can be treasure-troves of high-quality gifts! From cute vintage coffee cups to well-seasoned cast iron pans to kitchen linens, you can find plenty of options secondhand.

A Homemade Recipe Book

Another low-cost gift option is a homemade recipe book. This is an excellent gift if you and your giftee are bakers or chefs. Compile all your favorite recipes, write them on recipe cards, and organize them in a cute recipe box or recipe binder. This gift will likely take some time to put together, so plan accordingly!

$30 - $100

A Virtual Cooking Class

Lucky for us, a lot of amazing shops and brands (like King Arthur!) are hosting online cooking and baking classes this year! This means you can attend a cooking class with your giftee from the comfort of your own homes. Most virtual classes for two cost under $100, and you'll leave with newfound baking knowledge and delicious food!

A Donation in Somebody's Name

If your giftee loves giving back, consider donating in their name. Be sure to pick a charity that aligns with their values and thoroughly research the organization before donating (I love using Charity Navigator). If you're looking for inspo, I posted a list of anti-racism organizations back in June!

$100+

A CSA Box Subscription

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) boxes are monthly or weekly produce shipments from local farms. If your giftee loves cooking and local produce, consider buying them a CSA box subscription. A few months can cost up to several hundred dollars, so this gift is certainly not for everyone on your list!
